Document generation software costs about $24 to $290 a month for a team producing 1,000 documents a month at published 2026 prices, and the twelve-fold spread comes from the billing unit, not the features. Vendors meter documents, pages, credits, megabytes, user seats or new client records, so two quotes for the same job rarely share a unit. Five of the best-known enterprise products publish no price at all.

We read the pricing pages of 21 document generation and document automation vendors on October 13, 2026. Fourteen publish a figure, five publish nothing, and two block automated requests, which we say plainly rather than fill in from a software directory. Every rate below is the vendor's own number on that date.

Which document generation vendors publish a price?

The developer-facing PDF tools publish everything, the business-user template tools publish plans with a document allowance, and the Salesforce-native enterprise products publish nothing. The table keeps each vendor's own unit, because converting them is the whole job and we do that in the next two sections.

Read the last six rows as information, not as a gap. Conga, Nintex DocGen and S-Docs all sell into Salesforce accounts where the document tool is a line on a larger order, and a vendor that prices that way has no reason to print a number. If you are on Salesforce and one of them is on your shortlist, the published plans above are the anchor you bring to that call.

The six units document generation software bills you in

A document is not a standard unit, and that is what makes these quotes hard to line up. Six different meters appear on the fourteen pricing pages that publish.

Billing unitWho uses itIt bites you when
Documents per month or yearDocupilot, Documint, Plumsail, DocuGenerate, CraftMyPDF, APITemplate.io, PDFMonkeyVolume is seasonal. A plan sized for your average month fails in your renewal month
PagesDocmosis CloudYour documents are long. 1,000 twelve-page contracts are 12,000 pages, three times the entry quota
Credits per 5 pagesPDF Generator APIA 12 page document burns 3 credits, so the headline allowance shrinks by two thirds
Megabytes of dataCarboneYou merge large data sets or images. A 2.3 MB render counts as 3 documents
User or builder seatsTemplafy, Gavel, KnacklyMany people need to generate a document occasionally and each one needs a seat
New client recordsKnacklyYou onboard many small clients. The cap is intake, not output

Before you compare anything, write down three numbers: documents per month in your busiest month, average pages per document, and how many people need to build or run templates. Those three decide which unit is cheap for you, and no vendor will work it out on your behalf.

What 1,000 documents a month costs on each published plan

Here is one workload priced on every plan that can carry it: 1,000 documents a month, four pages each, five people who need access. List prices, monthly billing unless noted, the smallest plan that fits the volume.

PlanMonthly costCost per documentWhat the plan leaves out
APITemplate.io Basic$24$0.02420 templates. An API tool, so a developer builds the integration
CraftMyPDF Lite$29$0.0296 templates and no team access until the $99 plan
Docmosis Cloud Professional$49$0.049One user. Ten users is the $78 Enterprise plan. The 4,000 page quota is exactly this workload
DocuGenerate Premium$59$0.059Two team members. Five members needs the $199 Business plan
Plumsail Documents (1,000 document plan)$84 on annual billing$0.084Nothing over the allowance. Extra documents are $0.15 each
Documint Gold$149$0.149Allowance is 12,000 a year, so a busy month borrows from a quiet one
Docupilot Pro$149$0.149Five seats included. E-signature is extra, from $1.50 an envelope
Templafy Team$200$0.20Five seats at $40. No document cap stated
Knackly Starter$290$0.29$250 for four users plus $40 for the fifth. Capped at 400 new client records a month
Gavel Pro$290$0.29Two builders and three organization users. Built for legal intake workflows
Formstack suiteNot possible on a published planAbout $1.00 to $1.20 at the 250 includedThe $299 suite stops at 250 deliveries and the page prints no overage rate

The bottom of that table is not overpriced and the top is not a bargain. The first four rows are rendering engines: you send data and a template identifier, a PDF comes back, and your developers own everything around it. The rows from Plumsail down are tools a business user can run, with form intake, delivery rules, connectors to a CRM and, in most cases, signature. Paying $149 instead of $29 is paying to not staff the integration.

Now change one input. Make the documents twelve pages instead of four, which is ordinary for a master services agreement or a loan package. On Docmosis Cloud the job becomes 12,000 pages and leaves the $49 quota behind. On PDF Generator API it becomes 3,000 credits instead of 1,000. On every plan that counts documents, nothing changes. Long documents belong on a per document meter, and short high-volume output such as receipts or shipping labels belongs on a page or credit meter.

How much does document generation software cost?

Document generation software costs $19 to $699 a month on published 2026 plans, which works out to roughly $0.01 to $0.29 per document depending on volume. API tools start at $19 to $29 a month for 500 to 3,000 documents. Business-user tools run $84 to $149 for 1,000 documents. Seat-priced platforms start at $40 per user.

The per document rate falls steeply with volume inside one vendor. Docupilot is $0.29 a document on its $29 plan and $0.07 on its $699 plan. DocuGenerate drops from about $0.04 to $0.02, and states that custom volume pricing reaches $0.01 or lower. If your volume is growing, price the tier above the one you need today, because the step up is where the saving is.

Is document automation software priced per user or per document?

Both models are in use, and they suit opposite teams. Per document pricing favors a team where many people trigger a few documents each, because seats are included or cheap: Docupilot charges $4 for an extra seat. Per user pricing favors a small group producing very high volume, since Templafy and Gavel put no document meter on their seats.

The crossover is easy to find. Divide the per document plan's monthly price by the per user rate. Docupilot Pro at $149 against Templafy at $40 a user gives 3.7, so with four or more users the per document plan is cheaper for 1,000 documents, and with three or fewer the per user plan is.

How much does Conga Composer cost?

Conga publishes no price for Composer. Its pricing page on October 13, 2026 is a request form with no plan names, no per user rate and no document allowance, and the figures quoted in software directories do not appear on any Conga page we could read. Nintex DocGen and S-Docs, the other two Salesforce-native generators, also quote privately.

That leaves you negotiating without a list price, so build your own. Take your Salesforce user count and your monthly document volume, price the same workload on two published plans from the table above, and put those figures in front of the sales rep. A vendor quoting three times a published competitor has to explain the gap in features you will use.

How much does legal document automation software cost?

Legal document automation software with a published price costs $83 to $1,000 a month in 2026. Gavel runs $83, $210 and $290 a month for one or two builders, with larger plans from $417. Knackly runs $250, $500 and $1,000 a month for four to twelve users. HotDocs, the longest-established product in the category, publishes nothing.

Legal tools are priced on builders and client intake rather than documents because the value is in the interview logic, not the output count. A firm generating 200 engagement letters a month would pay $25 at a per document vendor and $290 at Gavel, and the difference buys conditional questionnaires and client-facing intake forms. If your documents are contracts rather than court forms, compare this category against contract management software pricing, since most CLM platforms generate agreements from templates as well.

What is the cheapest document generation software?

Among vendors publishing a US dollar price, DocuGenerate Plus at $19 a month for 500 documents and APITemplate.io at $19 a month billed annually for 3,000 PDFs are the cheapest paid plans. Per document, APITemplate.io is lowest at under one cent. Both are API-first, so the software is cheap and the integration is your cost.

The cheapest plan a non-developer can run alone is Plumsail at $25 a month for 200 documents or Docupilot at $29 for 100. Watch the overage on small plans. Plumsail's top-up price of $0.15 a document is higher than the in-plan rate on every tier, so a team that regularly exceeds its allowance should move up a plan rather than buy packs.

What the pricing page never shows

Template build. None of the fourteen published price lists includes building your templates. A 30 page agreement with conditional clauses, repeating tables and three signature blocks is days of work, and it is your work unless you pay for services. Knackly is the only vendor in the set that prices this openly: its $500 plan includes three hours a month of managed automation.

Signature. Generation and signing are separate meters more often than not. Docupilot adds $1.50 an envelope, Documint includes 5 to 50 envelopes a month by plan, Formstack bundles unlimited signatures into its suite. At 1,000 signed documents a month the envelope line can be ten times the generation line, so get both on one quote. Our guide to e-signatures and contract friction covers where signing delays come from.

Delivery and storage. A generated document has to go somewhere. Email delivery is usually included. Print and mail is not, and neither is long-term retention. If a share of your output is statements or notices that go out on paper, price it against invoice print and mail services, and if the documents are records you must keep, against document management software pricing.

Currency. Carbone and PDFMonkey price in euros, and DocuGenerate and PDF Generator API switch currency by visitor location. A US buyer should confirm the dollar price on the order form, because the figure a colleague in Europe forwards may not be the one you are billed.

Scale beyond templates. Once output passes roughly 50,000 regulated documents a month, with batch runs, postal presort and an audit trail, you have left this category. That is customer communication management software, where none of the nine vendors we checked publishes a price.

Five questions to ask before you sign

  1. What exactly counts as one unit: a document, a page, a credit, a megabyte or a record, and how many units does my longest document use?
  2. What happens when I exceed the allowance: a per unit overage, a forced upgrade or a hard stop mid-month?
  3. How many people can build templates and how many can run them, and what does one more of each cost?
  4. Is e-signature included, and if it is metered, at what price per envelope?
  5. Who builds the first templates, and what is the rate if I need help with conditional logic later?

One more practical point for teams whose output is reporting rather than contracts. A generated quarterly review or account summary often gets presented, not just sent, and it is common to turn the finished report into a slide deck for the customer meeting instead of rebuilding it by hand.

The short version

Document generation software costs $24 to $290 a month for 1,000 four-page documents at published 2026 prices, or about two cents to 29 cents a document. API tools are cheapest and need a developer. Business-user tools cost $84 to $149 and include seats and connectors. Seat-priced and legal tools cost the most per document and are not metered on volume. Check what the vendor counts as a unit before you compare, because pages, credits and megabytes all turn a long document into several. Conga Composer, Nintex DocGen, S-Docs, HotDocs and Apryse Fluent publish no price.
