ACH origination costs a business $20 to $50 a month in platform fees plus $0.10 to $1.00 per item on the US bank and credit union schedules we could read. For one company sending 4 batches and 200 payments a month, that is $49 to $189 a month. At 12 batches and 2,000 items it is $265 to $1,997 a month, because the per item fee does most of the work once volume grows. The cheapest bank at 200 items is not the cheapest at 2,000. Same day ACH adds $0.75 to $2.00 an item, and returns cost $1 to $15 each.
We read every figure below on October 29, 2026 from the institution's own published fee schedule or ACH fee page. Where a schedule is older than the page it sits on, we give its effective date. "n/p" means the schedule does not publish that line, and we did not guess it. Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, U.S. Bank, PNC and Truist quote ACH origination in a proposal, and on the pages we checked none of them publishes a price, so they are not in the tables.
ACH origination fees by bank
Banks charge for origination in up to four layers: a one time setup, a monthly fee for the service, a fee per batch or file, and a fee per item. Most schedules use three of the four. Read all of them, because a bank that waives one often prices another higher.
| Provider | Schedule date | Monthly fee (checked 2026-10-29) | Per batch or file | Per item | Setup |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red Canoe Credit Union | Jan 2026 | $25 | n/p | $0.12 | $100 |
| BancFirst | Jan 2024 | $30 module fee | $10 per file | $0.12 | n/p |
| Baker Boyer Bank | Undated page | $35 | $5 per batch | $0.15 | $150 |
| Great Southern Bank | Aug 2026 | $40 (Treasury Access platform) | $7.50 per next day batch | $0.10 | n/p |
| Mechanics Bank | Mar 2026 | $30 per company | $5 per transmission | $0.25 after 50 free | $50 |
| Commercial Bank of California | May 2025 | No ACH fee listed (the $30 Business Analyzed Checking charge applies to the account) | No file fee | $0.30 | $175 |
| Axos Bank | May 2026 | n/p | $1.00 per batch | $1.00 after the first 15 | n/p |
| Broadview Federal Credit Union | Effective Nov 1, 2026 | $20 | n/p | n/p | n/p |
| QNB Bank | Page updated Apr 2026 | $50 SmartPay file upload, $75 with SFTP | $15 per file outside online banking | $0.15 by file, $0.50 in online banking | $1,000 SFTP programming |
Two reading notes. Mechanics Bank lists "up to 50 items, no charge" under originated items, and we read that as a monthly allowance. Broadview publishes only the monthly fee on its commercial schedule, so any per item charge arrives in the agreement, not the price list.
What ACH origination costs at 200 and 2,000 items a month
A schedule is not a price until you apply it to your own volume. We priced two workloads on one company, credit entries only, next day settlement, no returns. Workload A is vendor and payroll payments: 4 batches and 200 items a month. Workload B is a heavier payer, such as a property manager or a marketplace paying out sellers: 12 batches and 2,000 items a month. Setup fees are left out because they are paid once.
| Provider | Cost per month at 200 items in 4 batches (checked 2026-10-29) | Cost per month at 2,000 items in 12 batches | What drives it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broadview Federal Credit Union | $20.00 plus any item fee | $20.00 plus any item fee | Per item price is not published |
| Red Canoe Credit Union | $49.00 | $265.00 | $0.12 per item on a $25 base |
| Commercial Bank of California | $60.00 | $600.00 | $0.30 per item, nothing else |
| Baker Boyer Bank | $85.00 | $395.00 | $35 base plus $5 batches |
| Mechanics Bank | $87.50 | $577.50 | 50 free items, then $0.25 |
| Great Southern Bank | $90.00 | $330.00 | $40 platform, $0.10 items |
| BancFirst | $94.00 | $390.00 | $10 per file adds up at 12 batches |
| Axos Bank | $189.00 | $1,997.00 | $1.00 per item after the first 15 |
The ranking changes with volume. Commercial Bank of California has no monthly fee and is the third cheapest at 200 items, then second most expensive at 2,000 because $0.30 is the highest per item rate among the banks that publish one except Axos. Great Southern Bank is sixth at 200 items and third at 2,000 for the opposite reason: its $40 base is the highest, and its $0.10 item fee is the lowest. If your volume is going to grow, price the schedule at the volume you expect in a year.
QNB Bank is left out of the workload table because its page does not say whether the $50 SmartPay fee stacks with the $15 file fee and the $0.15 item fee. Ask that question before you compare it. Online banking entries at QNB are $0.50 each, which at 200 items is $100 before any other charge.
How much does same day ACH cost?
Same day ACH costs $0.75 to $2.00 per item on the schedules that publish it, and some banks add a file or monthly fee on top. It is worth paying for a single late payroll correction and not worth paying as a default.
| Provider | Same day item fee (checked 2026-10-29) | Added same day charges | 100 same day items in one file |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanics Bank | $0.75 | $10 monthly fee, $5 per transmission | $90.00 |
| Broadview Federal Credit Union | $1.00 | None listed | $100.00 |
| Axos Bank | $1.50 | None listed | $150.00 |
| BancFirst | $1.50 | $30 per same day file | $180.00 |
| Commercial Bank of California | $2.00 | No same day file fee | $200.00 |
The last column counts the same day lines only. Whether the bank also charges its normal item fee on a same day entry is not stated on most schedules, so the real cost can be higher.
What do banks charge for ACH returns, reversals and notices of change?
Return fees run from $1 to $15 per item, and the range matters more than it looks. A company that pays 2,000 vendors a month and sees a 1 percent return rate has 20 returns. At Axos that is $20. At Commercial Bank of California it is $300.
| Provider | Returned item fee (checked 2026-10-29) | Reversal or deletion | Notice of change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Axos Bank | $1.00 | n/p | n/p |
| Mechanics Bank | $4.00, $8.00 if unauthorized | $20 per batch or entry | n/p |
| BancFirst | $5.00, $6.00 if unauthorized | $10 per item | $3.50 |
| Great Southern Bank | $5.00 | $20 per exception review | n/p |
| Commercial Bank of California | $15.00 | n/p | $5.00 |
The Federal Reserve prices the same entry in fractions of a cent for the bank, so the retail fee is mostly the bank's service, support and risk. That is why the number is negotiable, and why a company moving 2,000 items a month should ask.
Do banks charge for ACH?
Yes, for sending ACH payments in bulk. Receiving ACH is usually free, and one off online bank transfers often are too. The charge starts when you enroll in an origination service that accepts batch files, which is how payroll, vendor payments and customer refunds go out at volume.
What is an ACH origination fee?
An ACH origination fee is what your bank charges to send ACH credits or debits on your behalf. It can be a monthly service fee, a charge per batch or file, a charge per item, or all three. The bank is the originating depository institution, and it takes on liability for your files, which is why it also asks you to sign an origination agreement and may set an exposure limit.
How to compare ACH origination quotes
Quotes arrive in different shapes, so convert them into a cost per month at your own batches and items. A short checklist:
- Count the layers. Ask for monthly, per batch, per item and setup in writing, and for a statement that nothing else applies.
- Price the volume you will have in twelve months. A flat low base wins at 200 items and loses at 2,000.
- Ask what is included. Some platforms bundle the first items, as Mechanics Bank does with 50 and Axos with 15.
- Ask about returns, reversals and notices of change. Your return rate decides whether $1 or $15 matters.
- Ask for the same day price including any file fee, and whether the normal item fee also applies.
- Ask whether the bank also prices ACH positive pay, which blocks unauthorized debits and is a separate monthly line.
Treasury lines are usually bundled in one proposal. If you also take in mailed checks, compare the deposit side in our guides to remote deposit capture fees and lockbox pricing, so one bank is not cheap on payments and expensive on deposits.
What the fee schedule does not tell you
Three costs sit outside the schedule. The first is exposure limits: the bank caps how much you can send in a file or a day, and a higher limit may need credit review. The second is the cut off time, which decides whether a payment lands tomorrow or in two days, and the pressure to buy same day. The third is the work after the file goes out. Someone has to match each batch to the bank statement and chase returns, and a team that does it by hand spends more on that than on the fees. If you want to match each ACH batch against the bank statement lines without building a spreadsheet, that is the step to automate. The upstream controls matter as well, and our guide to the accounts payable process shows where the approval and the bank file fit together, while the vendor invoice management guide covers keeping vendor bank details clean, which is what prevents most returns.
Frequently asked questions
How much does ACH origination cost for a small business?
For 200 payments a month in 4 batches, the published schedules we read come to $49 to $189 a month. The low end is a credit union with a $25 base and $0.12 items. The high end charges $1.00 an item after the first 15. Expect setup of $50 to $175 on top.
Is ACH cheaper than a wire?
Per payment, yes. On the schedules above an ACH item costs $0.10 to $1.00, while outgoing domestic wires are priced at $12 to $25 each on the Broadview, Red Canoe and Mechanics Bank schedules. ACH is slower and has return risk, so it suits recurring payments and payroll, not urgent ones.
Can I negotiate ACH origination fees?
Yes. Fees on a posted schedule are a starting point, especially above 1,000 items a month or when you keep balances at the bank. Ask for the per item rate and the return fee to be lowered first, since those scale with your volume.
The short version
ACH origination runs $20 to $50 a month plus $0.10 to $1.00 an item on the schedules banks publish, which is $49 to $189 a month at 200 items and $265 to $1,997 at 2,000. Pick by the volume you will have next year, not today. Check the return fee and the same day price, ask for the national banks' quotes in writing, and price every offer as a monthly cost on your own batches and items.
